Recipient of the One of a Kind Show Craft Community Award

Jie Yang was born and raised in Beijing, China. She studied at the Beijing institute of Clothing Technology, Beijing, China, where she received a bachelor degree. In 2010 she traveled a long distance from China on a whim to study glass art at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. With no previous history in craft practice, this new direction was a major shift in her normal life. Coming to Canada with a background in fashion design proved very useful in her time at Sheridan College. Her current focus is now specific to design, and she strives for the utmost quality and innovation in her work.

Being in Canada studying glass has made Jie reflect on her own cultural heritage, and she uses traditional Chinese and Buddhist elements to design and create her own compositions. She takes this approach in contemporary glass art with the hope of influencing people’s perception about ancient cultures.
