Charlize-Nhung Nguyen
Lacy & Co Jewellery Supply Grant

Born in Vietnam, she grew up in Hong Kong refugee camp and immigrated to Canada as a refugee status. She is a contemporary artist, working and teaching as an artist-in-residence at Harbourfront Center. She holds advanced diplomas in Architecture and Jewellery Arts prior to her BFA. She is the recipient of the 2018 MAAD exhibition medal from OCAD University and recently granted an Emerging Artist Award at 2020 TOAF59th. Her work has shown in Canada, U.S.A, Romania, Spain, and Portugal.

At the core, her series focuses on the human body and its experience between material, form, and spatial. It is essential to her process to explore and experiment in a haptic manner. At the bench, Charlize's working concept is influenced by the source of "play" through research and experiment. Her work has evolved to include abstract and philosophical ideas, emphasizing the human connection within the material world. Her process is carried out in a metal studio, exploring narratives with various mediums, reinterpreting the result in the form of art jewellery, installation, and design objects. Questioning the monetary value of material and its relationship to contemporary culture is a parameter she aims to carry as an on-going art practice.
