Hae Joung Han
James H McPherson Award in Woodworking

Hae Joung Han graduated with a Bachelors of Craft and Design in Furniture, Honours from Sheridan College, Oakville. Hae creates functional furniture and objects to enhance one's experience in everyday life drawing from the simple beauty of natural elements. Central to her design process is the use of color and carefully considered materials in each piece, to create a connection with the user. She values simplicity and honestyin design including celebrating the natural quality of wood, as she believes its unique qualities give her work a longevity and value that is only enhancedwith the passing of time. Hae considers function and how humans interact in given spaces, to design time-enduring objects that bring a lightness and meaningful joy to our everyday.

Hae believes that most furniture starts from, and is an extension of the human body. The way in which we choose to use furniture is what gives a piece its value, which as a designer allows her to consider how her creations are an extension of and offering to the human body. From the sketching to the finishing process, she wants to draw attention to the small moments that give the final work meaning to not only the user, but to her as a maker. By focusing on detail and beauty through the creation process, Hae Joung celebrates the value of simplicity and honesty through her work as well as the outcome.
