Inuit showcase: drawings by Shuvinai Ashoona

Come see our display of new drawings by celebrated Inuit artist Shuvinia Ashoona in the Craft Ontario Shop!

Shuvinai is the eldest daughter of the renowned Kiawak Ashoona. Her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona was one of the all-time great artists of Cape Dorset, and her two cousins Annie Pootoogook and Siassie Kenneally have been featured in exhibitions with her. She has a fertile imagination, and her perceptions are like no other. Her favourite subject matter is eggs. “It’s a restart for people’s brains,” she said. “Eggs that come out of the earth – out of the vapour of the earth – are more interesting than seeing the inside of the egg.” She also likes the various shapes of eggs. Shuvinai is never at a loss for what to draw, from the Garden of Eden to the earth, from God to monsters, to eggs decorated with tools, to the land and people. She also draws people she knows. At times, she draws on long, narrow sheets of paper (offcuts from the print shop).
