While craft is an artistic endeavour that involves the creation of objects, it is also an expanded field of relationships. The Space & Place Symposium will provide a unique opportunity to build relationships and connect diverse audiences with voices that share how collaboration and fostering community can expand capacity and impact for craft and design practice.
Including five live presentations, a film screening, panel conversations and craft demonstrations, we invite audiences and future makers into the world and discipline of fine craft, inspiring new thinking and approaches to this material practice.

Munira Amin (textiles), Naomi Clement (ceramics), Dayna Gedney (furniture) and Pasha Moezzi (jewellery) will discuss the many ways in which they build and sustain community through their involvement in organizations, projects, and practice. Nehal El Hadi, Editor-in-Chief of Studio Magazine, will moderate this lively conversation.
Jean Marshall (Anishinaabe/English bead artist), Sheila DeCorte (Ojibwe Knowledge Keeper), Kathryn Walter (textiles) and Connie Chisolm (furniture) will talk about two important projects they have worked on through the Thunder Bay Public Library Indigenous Knowledge Centre. Moderated by Janna Hiemstra, Executive Director, Craft Ontario.
Alyssa Getz, Ian MacInnis, Nadira Narine and Rob Raeside are remarkable and skilled glass artists. They also share a common experience, as the hardworking assistants on a popular series all about glassblowing! See them show off their prodigious talents.
The wonderful Judith Tinkl, an exceptional quilt artist, will converse with Alan Elder. Tinkl’s career has touched many aspects of artistic practice, including volunteerism, curation, organization, service and advocacy. This exciting and far-reaching exchange will be led by Alan Elder, a respected Canadian senior curator, writer, and thinker.
Hear Jeremy Vandermeij, Deborah Wang, Robyn Wilcox and Michael Madjus, the core and driving force behind the DesignTO Festival, talk amongst themselves with some guidance from moderator Melanie Egan, Director of Craft & Design.
This beautiful and touching film, directed by Danièle Bellemare, is a tribute to her mother-in-law, the great Elena Lee, who dared to dream big. Elena Lee shared her passion for glass art and artists, supporting them and celebrating their work for forty years.
