Since 1959 Dorset Fine Arts has released an annual collection of Inuit prints created by the artists of Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut. This year's selected artists showcase impressive imagery and style, but also a strong use of narrative. Browse this year's collection.
The collection's long tradition of high quality art prints has an active audience and following. To anticipate for the demand, Dorset Fine Arts sets an official release date for the collection, every year. The prints are not to be sold, by any gallery, until their official release.
This year's official release for sale date is October 15th.
The 2022 collection boasts a selection of wonderfully graphic works. Cee Pootoogook's Deep Blue Bear and Qavavau Manumie's Collecting Berries are two great examples. Both artists distill out the beauty of a creature's form and detail from the not-so tidy wilds of an Arctic landscape. This kind of simplification and peacefulness in the image is a common part of the annual collection.
Owls have often had a special place in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection, both for artists and collectors. This year, the young Ooloosie Saila is leading the trend with her flowing feathered owls. Ooloosie is part of a strong tradition of female artists, including the great Ningiukulu Teevee who’s masterly owl depictions are always collection favourites.
Shuvinai Ashoona injects surreal visions into her depictions of contemporary Inuit life. Her prints and drawings have attracted the attention of many notable galleries and this year her fantastical work was exhibited at the 59th Venice Biennale.
Lastly, Ningiukulu Teevee does not disappoint in this year’s collection. As always, the artist brings gorgeous life and captivating narrative to the medium. Her established and successful career brings structure and leadership to this year's breathtaking print collection.
