Mary Philpott
2015 Award: Helen Copeland Memorial Award in Ceramics

Mary Philpott is a full time studio ceramic artisan, making custom and limited production Art Tile and Vessels. Over the past twenty years, she has taught at various institutions and worked in the studio, where she developed the tile that is exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States and in France. In 1995, she graduated from Sheridan College School of Craft and Design with a degree in ceramics, with a previous Honours degree in Art history and Archeology at the University of Guelph.

Periodically, Mary has done residencies and intensive workshops, in order to remove herself from her regular studio practice. She wishes to free herself of the constraints of regular customer orders and production, which allows for new inspiration and interaction with other artists.

In the last three years, Mary has been exploring and developing sculpture through workshops and working alone, which reflects the subject matter of her tiles.
