Chan Fraser Design Jewellery Award

Established by Chan Fraser Design and JJStudio, this award recognizes excellence in jewellery and is open to all career levels. Chan Fraser Design is comprised of Mo Ying Chan and Greg Fraser.

MO YING CHAN
Mo Ying Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to Canada where she studied and worked in the field of fashion design. Her experience in this area helped to develop a practical approach to problem-solving in metal work. She returned to studies with a new focus on Jewellery Arts, Goldsmithing, at George Brown College in Toronto, along with explorations in various craft and art media, as well as a summer of study in Cortana, Italy, through the University of Georgia Abroad program. Her work specializes in hand fabricated pieces with unusual gemstones.

GREG FRASER
Greg Fraser studied drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art, and fine arts at the University of Guelph. He has exhibited his paintings in several solo and juried group shows. He also studied jazz composition and theory, played in bands, built a recording studio, and has composed and recorded electronic music. His first experience in the gem/jewellery world was that of a “bag carrier” for Mo Ying at gem shows, and he had only a passing interest in gemstones until a chance meeting with an Australian opal dealer at a Hong Kong show in 1994. He became mesmerized by opals, and a year later began buying rough opal for cutting and polishing. Greg has since branched out to cut and carve a variety of materials, finding that general aesthetic principles can be easily transported from painting and music to gem carving.

JJSTUDIO is operated by jewellery artist couple Jay Joo and Alice Yujing Yan. Both artists have been working on various series exploring three-dimensional structure and surface in their personal body of works. In their individual practice, Jay and Alice are each inspired by structure and surface but in very different ways. Both artists had a very different Training background, which showcases in their personal body of work.
